I hope you all had a lovely half term break.
Our topic for Term 2 is called Awesome Authors: Into the woods.
Week ending 10th December
This week the children have been performing our new songs ready for the Nativity next week.
They have been learning the story of the first Christmas.
In Reception the children have been learning the phonemes f, ff and l and ll.
Week ending 19th November
Thank you for the fantastic 'WOW' cards this week.
Our enquiry question this week is: Are all trees the same?
We have been learning about the different species found in the UK. The children have been thinking about how each tree is different. We then looked at the structure of a tree.
We have been reading The Gruffalo. We have been talking about the characters thoughts and feelings as well as describing the characters. The children have been reciting the story.
In Mathematics we have been exploring 2D shapes.
In Phonics the Reception children have been learning the phonemes e and u.
Week ending 12th November
Our enquiry question this week is: What is a woodland?
We have been learning about a woodland habitat. The children have been thinking about the sights and sounds of a woodland and describing the things they would see and hear. .
The children have been creating subtraction sentences and the Reception children have been using objects to take away.
The children have also been creating poppies for Remembrance Day.
In Phonics the Reception children have been learning the phonemes c, k and ck.
Week ending 5th November
Our first enquiry question is: What would you find in the woods?
To start the week the children found some clues about a creature that lives in the woods. The children then used these clues to draw and write about the mystery creature.
We have also been asking questions about the different animals found in the woods and then using non-fiction texts to find the answers.
In Mathematics the Reception children have been exploring the five frames.
The Year 1 children have been using the whole and part models to show their knowledge of subtraction.
In Phonics the Reception children have been learning the phonemes m, d and g. They have been using the phonemes they know to read VC and CVC words. They have also been matching objects to the initial sound and writing the graphemes they know.
Our first topic is called Enchanted lands.
Week ending 22nd October
This week we have been reading the Magic Porridge Pot.
The children have been drawing and writing instructions for making porridge. We then followed the instructions to make some porridge.
In Mathematics we have been learning about subtraction.
Week ending 15th October
Our enquiry question this week is: What is a cycle?
The children have been thinking about the cycle of the seasons and we have been thinking of other cycles in nature for example life cycles.
In Mathematics we have been finding number bonds to 10 and using first, then and now stories to create addition sentences.
In Phonics the reception children have been learning the phonemes p, i and n. They have been reading VC and CVC words and they have been showing us the graphemes they can write.
Week ending 8th October
Our enquiry question this week is: Why are the seasons important?
We have been thinking about what happens to the weather in each season and how that impacts different plants and animals.
Our new text this week was called 'How to grow a unicorn'.
We have been discussing the main events and thinking about what kind of plant we would grow if we had magical seeds.
In Mathematics the children used a 5 frame and a whole-part model to find different ways to make 5 (fact families).
In phonics the reception children have learnt two new phonemes ,a and t. We have been using the three phonemes the children know to read at, as and sat.
Week ending 1st October
Our enquiry question this week is: How does the world around us change in each season?
We have been discussing and recording the changing weather and observing the leaves changing colour in the school garden.
We have also been reflecting on other things that change.
The reception children also learnt the phoneme 's' this week.
In Mathematics we have been finding one more or one less.
Week ending 24th September
Our enquiry question this week is: What is weather?
We have been observing how the weather changes throughout the day and across the week.
We have been describing the weather and asking questions, for example why does it rain?
In Mathematics we have been counting forwards and backwards. The children have been creating number lines and number staircases.
Week ending 17th September
We have had a busy second week at school.
Our key text this week was Freddie and the Fairy. In the story Freddie wishes for different pets. The children have been creating different pets, making marks and using the sounds they know to show their ideas.
In Mathematics we have been counting accurately and learning to represent numbers with marks and objects.
We have also been exploring different media to create self portraits. The children have been looking in mirrors and drawing themselves using paint, whiteboard pens and the computer.
Week ending 10th September
We have had a great first week together. The children have been exploring the resources and learning lots of new things.
In Mathematics we have been learning to group objects and we have been using the words more, fewer and equal to compare them.
